Michael Phelps — Golden Child?

Michael Phelps made history over the weekend. The 23-yr-old from Baltimore now has 8 gold medals from the Beijing Olympics. So is this guy a golden child, raised in an ideal life with every advantage coming his way? It doesn’t appear to be so. As a little boy Michael was diagnosed with ADHD. He started swimming at age 7 to have an outlet for his excess energy. When he was 9 his parents divorced. At 19 he was arrested for driving under the influence. He has “attended” college between 2004 and 2008 but doesn’t plan to graduate anytime soon. His friends call him “Gomer” because of his resemblance to the good-natured country boy played by Jim Nabors. He eats around 12,000 calories a day (about five times more than the average adult male) to keep up with his amazing level of activity. He’s already been making approximately $5 million per year in endorsements, and the 8 gold medals have earned him a $1 million bonus from his sponsor, Speedo.

So what are you doing with your “challenges?” Are you using them as an excuse to justify mediocrity? Or are you, like Michael, focusing your uniqueness in a positive direction. Do you have a diagnosed malady? Were your parents divorced or did you get into trouble in your teenage years? Maybe having “challenges” is a strong motivator for doing something extraordinary. And maybe having things too easy makes coasting too attractive. Remember the caterpillar’s transition to a butterfly. It’s the struggle that causes those beautiful wings to appear. Maybe your “disadvantages” are your opportunity to find a more authentic path to success.

It’s typically the challenges that help us find our true calling. Henry David Thoreau said: “I see young men, my townsmen, whose misfortune it is to have inherited farms, houses, barns, cattle, and farming tools; for these are more easily acquired than got rid of. Better if they had been born in the open pasture and suckled by a wolf, that they might have seen with clearer eyes what field they were called to labor in.”

Frequently I see that those who have been given advantages early in life find themselves with a strong sense of being off track in their forties or fifties. I have a friend who, while a gifted singer and performer, has never developed these or any other talents as he is too busy protecting the money he inherited from his father. A current client was given the best education money could buy, including medical school, and now, at age fifty-two, realizes he has never pursued his real calling. The search for authentic work is a very personalized and internal one and can easily be derailed by too many advantages. The best medical, dental, or law school will never provide a fulfilling career path if that path is not a match with the unique gifts of the person involved. Just as you shouldn’t let a lack of money deter you from pursuing a great opportunity now, don’t let money or circumstances you already have keep you from moving toward your passion.

Incidentally, I have to also add that in addition to his goal-setting and amazing focus, Michael Phelps is described by the Baltimore Sun as “a man incredibly invested in the success of the people he cares about.” They go on to say he’s “unbelievably kind-hearted” with young children after practices and events. I suspect that even at age 23 he remembers the painful challenges of his own childhood.

few days later i'll be having English Oral
getting a little nervous and worried.
afraid that i can't score well for oral then
it will pull down my English mark.

on Thursday, went to play badminton.
then i came home,i realized my wrist pained
then i thought was normal muscle ache,
i go and rubbed with medical oil.

when Friday morning woke up,MY GOSH!!!
my wrist was pained like hell.
it was my 1st time i injured my wrist.
cannot moved at all.

Friday evening, when to see 'Zhong Yi' at Fajar.
it help me twisted me my bones or so called ligament.
after that,i helped me to bandage up.
SAD!!!
had to rest for at least 2 weeks to wait till it recover.
it was the first injury
so i must really take good care
then can play well in Nov competition.

today went to Singapore Polytechnic
at Dover road
SP is the oldest poly in S'pore
about 50 over year

there were many different schools in poly
School of Business, School of Engineering
. . . so on and so fro

i selected the choice of Accountancy
but the poly gave me Banking services
it under the School of Business

dunno why i am quite interested in business studying
so i choose that as a choice to visit

i really enjoyed the trip today
i had learn something from the course,Banking Services
learn how to see graph and read the index.
also learn how to play with the stocks

overall i maybe choosing SP
but need to work hard first
then can say!!

today after E-math remedial,
i went for coaching.
today our CCA training will be using the NEW sport hall!!
actually it only has 2 levels
but don't have second floor
and it has four courts
i felt very honour
because the hall is not officially open yet.

our badminton team had the privilege to enter the hall first
in the morning,Mdm Heng,our principal
came and talk to our badminton team players
she said,"this hall is we spent THREE MILLION to build for us .. . ."
then my students came tell me that,
"Are we stepping on the three million?"
i laughed until i cannot make it. .
they were really so comedy
LOL!!

when i started playing,
the hall is painted blue and orange(at the sides)
the rooftop is light orange too
the blue is too striking
that i played i can't even see the shuttle
and it was quite windy
i feel quite light when playing
maybe the density at third floor is light
the floor was blue too
not slippery liao(as it is new)

the toilets have the showering liao!!
so after training can shower in school

overall quite nice la.
look very new
but the wall a bit weird
striking blue plus orange at the sides.

this movie was funny. all the people in the cinema laugh like no body business. but the movie played till the ends,it was quite sad. 'qi zai' die. he die because he safe dicky's father. he used his electrical energy to save dicky's father. it really very sad. he die then change into a qi zai doll. hahas. so so cute. worth it to watch!!

he is a very pro in math and a very comedy man

then our SS teacher is Mdm Ho
SIAN!!!
during her lesson can fell asleep
she like keep talking to the wall like that
nobody response her,
she also kept talking.
non-stop some more till the lesson ended
her class i must say it was damn boring

overall all the other teachers quite okay la
not much problem
Mr Ho is our Geo teacher again.GOOD!!

today woke up very late. too tired.. woke up at 11am.. miracle bah.. i seldom sleep until so late.. afternoon went to Lot 1 and search for my comic.. finally have book 4. this comic i love it very much. can learn quite a number of things in the books about badminton.. after buying go home le. read the comic.. hahas..

I've learns that when playing doubles,the person standing in-front must have confidence to tab or attack. or else cannot win the game.. hahas..

Yesterday went down to Tampines Sports hall with Shun Yuan.. uncle not driving us go because they went for holidays.. ytd all the players were young players. me and shun yuan were the younger among all of them.. most of them are 21 and above bah.. we played quite well ytd. partner each other play against Richard's wife and Amanda,EX-SBA.. hahas.. the score your should know. we did not win the matches. but we tried.. at least we din kana thresh by them. we got 10 points and above.. don't remember liao.. hahas..

after playing soon going to be 10pm. i went to the toilet and take a shower.. i was so so so SWeaTY!! sweat too much.. after taking a shower it was refreshing. then we both take MRT and alight at bugis. we went to KFC and eat our dinner or maybe can said it was supper bah.. it was quite late. 11pm plus already. we ate quite fast and take bus 960 home. he also live at Petir. but it opposite my blk. near the coffee shop there. i reached home was about 12pm le.. so so tiring.. then went to bed and sLEeP..

hahas.. very nervous today.. getting back N level results.. i promoted to sec 5 le.. ok la my results. eng,5. math,3. combined humanities,3.combined science,3.POA,2.. overall quite well done bah.. but compared to Prelim it almost the same. except for math and combined humanities. drop by 2 grade. but it's ok la.. at least my best 3 subjects i score 6 points. hahas.. did not reach my own target. haiz.. hahas.. today quite happy.. my parents also say my results ok la.. not so bad. WAHAHAS!!!!

yesterday was the Ashaway Youth competition held at Tampines Sports hall.. ytd i played single at court 8.. VS Zhou Ling Lin.. she was from Singapore Sports School. haiz.. lost to her la.. but the score quite near(4get e score liao).. and i'm too nervous also.. too gan chiong wanna hit the shuttle when the shuttle was high up.. her very shot always aim on the single line lo.. i played with quite hard.. must chiong 2 take our shots.. if out also must take.. my judgement not so good.. lost nvm gain some experiences.. but hor every time i played a competition also VS Singapore Sports School players.. i dunno y lo.. play SAFRA Open early this year also VS Cheong Hui Min from Singapore Sports School too.. if not Singapore Sports School then will be Raffles Institute.. haiz.. so SUAY!!!! after playing finished,i went back to school for the guys training.. then evening went back to Tampines n played again..

today was the second day of the Ashaway Youth competition.. today i was playing doubles.. my partner is Qiu Miao.. today damn angry!! actually we can walk over want lo.. our opponents late.. we wait for them about 20+ minutes.. we both kept stroking.. they slowly changed their shoes and do warm-ups.. the empire also bias.. think our opponents was the empire's friend. so so so BIAS!!! and we still lose to them.. both of us made too much mistakes and not focus enough.. we played ramble sets.. score was 19-21,21-10 and 19-21.. it was damn close.. they were not strong .. btw we both did not lost the matches.. is we give them win.. hahas.. we fang shui!! after finished playing,we went back to school and play badminton again.. played with shun yuan and chun hao.. then after palying go eat at Bangkit coffee shop..

hahas.. long time did not post le.. very lazy.. i am very busy.. busy training for my competition.. last 3 days i've been playing badminton and watching badminton,CHEERS doubles at SBA.. hahas.. this year i did not take part.. no partner.. me almost everyday play badminton.. so no time use internet.. i am training for my SMBA competition.. Ashaway open on the 10 dec onwards.. so after i came back from India i've been training very hard.. i see improvement in myself.. hahas.. mus jiayou!!

Ethipothala is a mountain stream cascading down the hills from a height if 21.3m into a lagoon. this waterfall is a combination of three streams namely Chandravanka Vagu,Nakkala Vagu & Tummala Vagu. the waterfalls was damn nice. the monkeys there were cute.

Today was the third day in Hyderabad. all of us woke up very early because we need travel by bus to Nagarjuna Sajar dam.. we need sit on the bus for 3 hours bus ride in order to reach there.. Nagarjuna Sajar was located at a distance of 150km from Hyderabad. it one of the most prominent Buddhist centers ans attractive tourist spots in Andhra Pradesh known in ancient days as Vijayapuri. Nagarjuna dam was completed in 1966,is 124m high and 1km long has 26 crests gates. the lake,which it straddles,is the third largest man-made lake in the world. 4km aways from the dam.. we need to take a 45mins ride on the ferry to the man-made lake. the view was nice.. but before i went into the ferry,i went to the toilet. and something happened in there!! the toilet was dark. not a single light. some more it was early in the morning. i locked the door. then i am struck in the toilet. the lock was too rusty.. while opening the door,i cut my hands. when i come out,i saw my hands were bleeding vigorously.. but i don't feel the pain when i got cut.. then the nurse helped me to stop my blood from flowing. the nurse was so rough. i got cut on both my hands. 2 fingers on the left and one more finger on the right. my right hand was the hand which bleed vigorously.. only the third day in Hyderabad and i injured myself.. then everything as per normal. went up to the ferry and see the man-made lake. the view was so nice.. then we went in to the Nagarjuna Sajar dam to see how the electricity was generate.. in India,their electricity was generate by using water..

This trips to Nagarjuna Sajar dam and the Ethipothala waterfalls was a memorable and unforgettable trip.. love this trip very much!!

hahas.. i am back !!! yesterday arrived in S'pore at 6.30AM.. so happy.. finally i am back home.. so we took midnight flight back from Hyerabad to S'pore.. so tired.. then i took cab with Faris to go back home.. from airport to BP the taxi fares was $33.30.. because need paid $4 extra.. 2 persons in the cab .. need paid $4 it because we took cab just outside the airport so need paid the driver extra charges..

me reached home at about 8am plus.. feeling so tired.. but the feeling reached home was nice.. HOME SWEET HOME!!! but haiz.. cannot sleep.. need go and see doctor.. sun morning i sprained my ankle lo.. very painful.. so my dad bringing me go see doctor.. swollen until like zhu jiao..

in this 10 days i've learnt a lot of new things.. see a lot of new things which cannot be seen in Singapore.. made a lot of new friends too in Ramadevi Public School.. became more closer with Unity Sec students too.. hahas.. the feelings i had was hard to say.. if hav time,i will write out what happened in the last 10 days(16-26 nov) in Hyerabad.. tired!!! lazy to type out.. i took 200 plus of photos.. hahas.. i really enjoyed at Hyerabad.. the peoples there were very warm coming us,the Singaporeans..

yesterday i went down to Tampines Sport hall to lay badminton.. wow!! only had 2 courts.. 2 court nvm,but alot of peoples.. uncle uncle that type.. i only played one single and one doubles matches.. wen long also going down to Tampines. he also din manage to play. stroke with me then my racket string burst.. fast!! only hit a few shots then my racket string burst.. then went to restring.. put Blue colour strings. actually i put white but hor white i every time put then i tried put other colours.. hahas.. quite nice la.. i played single with Chun Hao.. score is 20-22 and 14-21.. lost to him.. i am not prepare to play with him mah.. so think i any how played.. need train more on single.. last time my single quite good.. hahas..

Yesterday i went down to Tampines to play badminton.. 7-10pm.. hahas.. i played quite ok la.. so-so.. i reached home about 12.20AM like that.. hahas.. some more it raining.. then i changed , when to bed..

morning woke up at 9.30am plus.. need meet denis3 buy ethnic costumes.. we went to Gombak eat breakfast .. eat mac.. then went to search for our Malay ethnic costumes.. there sell a lots of Malay costumes.. but damn expensive.. then we take MRT to Bugis.. also go search for Malay or India costumes.. we went near to the Little India there buy .. finally we bought.. walked until we both very tired.. hahas.. then went to Bugis Street.. see see look look.. then i saw a shop selling accessories.. ear rings and bracelets.. i saw one bracelet like my friend one.. my friend lost the bracelet.. so anxious looking for it.. therefore i decided to buy one bracelet for my friend.. it consider a gift for my friend.. i really hope my friend like that.. then i take bus 960 home..

today go training at Gombak stadium.. 3-6pm.. but i reached early.. stroke with Wen Long.. hahas.. then about three plus many players coming in .. then i around five plus Qiu Miao come.. she said she will drop by.. really drop by.. then Mr Lim also come.. i partner Mr Lim then Chun Hao partner Qiu Miao.. we played half court only.. hahas.. very fun.. Chun Hao always aim me lo.. hahas.. i move here move there.. hahas.. in the end , he also cannot hit me.. hahas.. very fun.. then six plus,i partner Miao with against Chun Hao and a uncle.. hahas.. Miao wear slipper lo.. i have to cover her.. run here run there .. quite ok la.. tired but fun ..

today morning woke up quite early.. because need to go Unity Sec Sch.. final dances rehearsal for the India trip.. hahas.. feeling very tired in the morning.. i rushing .. afraid i might be late.. hahas.. breakfast i just ate a pancake ans drink half of the milo.. no time drank finish ans it too hot also.. i meet Germaine,Faris,Gary and Edwan at South View lrt station.. waited for Faris ans Edwan for about 15 mins then they come.. then we together took MRT to Yew Tee..

reached Unity Sec,we all went up to their dance studio .. we kept practicing the steps.. hahas. when your see it really quite simple and easy. but when learning,the processes were difficult.. we left Unity about 12.15pm like that.. then we all go home..

at night,i when to CCK stadium to play badminton with Wanni and her cousins.. from 8-10pm.. then i saw the uncle.. always at CCK stadium do coaching. he one year did not go down Gombak ans play le.. so i saw him. we still can chat. hahas.. after playing,i go home. reached home about 10.40pm like that.. watched a bit tv then went to bed le.

today woke up quite early.. slept almost 10 hours.. hahas.. morning have my breakfast cake and tea.. then i play computer from 10am plus to 1pm plus.. rest awhile..

afternoon went back to school to take 3 tubes of shuttles from Mr Lim.. then chat with Mr Lim for quite a while..take LRT then MRT to gombak.. having training there.. reached about 2.55pm.. lucky i am not late.. hahas.. just on time... then have training.. toda3,coach train us on strokes.. lobbing and played matches.. i stroke with a Hillgrove guy.. his name was Wen Long.. he knew me lo.. i just know him recently.. i played with him.. he quite good lo.. have many FaKe actions.. i got to learn more from him.. hahas.. he same age as me lo.. hahas.. this year also N level..

then at 6pm training ended.. all the players all home.. me and chun hao stayed with coach.. we stroke and play play until 7pm plus.. hahas.. free courts mah.. so we played lo.. then i take a shower.. go eat dinner.. uncle treat me eat mee pok.. he dun wanna take my $$ lo.. my grip i changed new one he also dun wan take my $$ .. i really hen nan zuo ren.. hahas.. i very bu hao yi si .. after eating,uncle drove me home.. reached home almost 9pm.. hahas.. feeling quite tired..

afternoon go out for lunch with miao.. then we went to eat at the food courts.. today she had donno what competition at Semei ITE there.. hahas.. wish her all the best for the competition at night.. jiayou!!meow.. hahas.. after eating lunch,i went home to pack my badminton bag ans prepared to go for training..

i reached gombak stadium about 2.45pm .. quite early liao.. inside the hall had quite a numbers of players reached earlier that us.. the worst was the lee chin.. reached gombak at 12pm.. CrAzY lol.. LOL.. hahas.. her mind something wrong.. today training was mostly physicals.. do footworks and put shuttles.. not train much today due to only 2 courts.. then played doubles matches for the girls.. guys played single..

our training ended at 6pm.. took photos.. i dun know why every training need take photos lo.. very funny lo.. then i do some warm-downs.. take a shower.. when to eat my dinner with uncle and chun hao.. after eating,uncle drove me home.. reached home at 8.15pm.. feeling so tired.. but quite ok la.. hahas..

today afternoon i went for my interview at Taka.. i reached too early. i reached at 2.30pm. but the person said at 3pm.. then i waited till 3pm.. but i waited till 3.30pm like that then saw the lady which i've been talking to.. i thought she was quite young but i mistaken.. she had a very big butt.. hahas.. then i fill in the application form for that promoter job.. she said she will give me a call whether it approve or not.. after that,i go around shopping .. walk walk .. at about 6.50pm i took bus 171 home.. in the bus feeling very tired.. fall asleep.. hahas.. i reached home about 7.30pm.. have my dinner then revise my 'O' level mother tongue paper for tomorrow.. haiz.. don't feels like taking that paper.. i did not study much.. but quite ok la. i have confidence in tomorrow paper..

today i woke up at around 11.30am.. think i was too tired.. i seldom slept until 11am plus.. then i took a shower and had my chicken rice as breakfast... after eating,i taught my sis math homeworks.. hahas.. around 12.20pm i left my house taking lrt to bukit gombak ..

i reached there about 12.50pm.. in the stadium,i sit down and started wearing my shoes.. do some warm-ups then stroke with chun hao... first match we both play against Jason uncle and Xiao Xuan.. haiz.. sad 2 sae that .. all the shuttles were hit by chun hao.. i stand sown thee doing nothing.. like i am invisible .. almost all shuttles were taken by him. i only need to serve .. i very sad.. but nvm.. that was the starting matches.. the second match i partner with one uncle play against tiger and a student(a sec 1 guy).. first match they won. then second match we won. 1-1 .. fair game.. hahas.. after that matches,i rest a while.. getting tired and restless.. third match we both(chun hao n i) again play against coach(with no hair) and Tze lin(sec 1 girl) .. hahas.. this match very funny.. quite ok la.. it also a draw game.. and then behind still had 2 more games to go .. tired.. we played until 5pm lo .. chun hao and me first time said very tired.. because we seldom said we are tired.. training also did not said that word.. think we played too much ..

out of 7 days,me almost play 5 times .. chun hao 6 times.. we both like crazy people right?most of the people will think like that.. after showering,we when to eat our dinner.. then uncle drove me home. at night,watch tv and then sleep liao.. me cannot take it.. really damn tired..

toda3,i woke up at 10am.. feeling very refresh.. hahas.. then after eating breakfast,i accompany my mum go buy some groceries.. help her take mah.. i very xiao shun right? hahas.. then went eat lunch with chun hao at BP.. we ate LSJ.. while eating,we also chatting.. after eating went to comics shop to see comics.. then library.. then finally go home.. i reached home i watched tv.. then at night i will go shopping with my parents.. when walking to sheng siong,my dad and i saw have PAI PAI.. it the zai zai gods.. hahas.. they both very funny.. i took photos on the lion dances and the gods.. haiz.. i still have my Chinese O level re-take on wed.. i din study much.. hahas.. play too hard nowadays liao.. think i can still make it and pass at least get an A2 bah..

after training,i took a shower at there then go eat with uncle and his wife.. after eating uncle drove me home.. i reached home about 7.50pm..
